New York State Education Law requires that  physical examinations be com pleted for students prior to entering Pre-K or kindergarten and in grades 2, 4, 7, and 10, as well as for new entrants to district. 

Examinations may be completed by our school physician or, if you prefer, your own physician.  Physical examinations are also required for students who wish to participate in interscholastic athletics, (except for Pre-K physicals must be done by their own Health Care Provider.) 

The school nurse annually screens vision, hearing, height, weight, and, from the ages of 8 to 16, scoliosis.  Parents will be informed of any unusual findings.  These referrals need to be followed  up by their primary care provider and a copy should be given to the school nurse.  Dental Health Certificates are requested for Pre-K, Kindergarten, 2, 4, 7, 10 & new students to the district.

All children entering and attending school must be adequately immunized against Polio, Diphtheria, Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, & Varicella(Chickenpox). 

Without proper proof of immunization, children will not be permitted to attend school.

New York State Public Health Law also requires all children entering the Pre-K or Kindergarten and seventh grade be immunized against Hepatitis B.  If you have any questions, please contact the appropriate school nurse.

Head lice often affects our elementary school students. Although our nurses consistently check heads, it would help if parents routinely check the heads of their children for lice infestation. If you suspect that your child has head lice, please inform the school nurse immediately so she can assist you in helping your child and the other children in the school. The school District has a No Nit Policy in place.

Please notify the school nurse if your child has any special health needs.  This confidential information is important to a successful school experience.  Exam ples of such special health needs include bee sting allergy and/or allergy to any other substance; difficulty with vision, hearing, or speech; and the need for medication during the school day.  We need a doctor's statement of food allergies for cafeteria staff and for special equipment such as crutches or walkers, either on a temporary or permanent basis.

A current health/emergency form must be on file in the appropriate school nurse's office.  Please update information as needed during the school year.

New York State law states that no medication can be administered at school except under doctors' orders. Even then, the medication must be given by the school nurse. This includes not only prescription medicines but over-the-counter remedies such as Tylenol, cough syrup and cough drops.

School nurses are permitted to dispense medications during school hours only when:

1. Written permission is received from parents.
2. Written permission is received from a physician with instructions for administering.
3. A parent/guardian delivers the medicine to the nurse's office in a pharmacy container with the label intact. (Ask your pharmacist for a second, smaller container for school doses.) Over-the-counter medications must be in their original unopened packaging with the student's name written on it.

Contact your school nurse regarding self-carry asthma medication. Do not allow children to carry medicine to school.
